How to Use Instagram to Market Your Business
Instagram is a powerful tool and there are many ways you could use it to market your business to promote your products and services. There has been a big increase in engagement with photos and videos and Instagram allows you to do both to get your brand message out there.
Instagram is a photo sharing mobile app and is used by 400 million active users worldwide. If you think your business might not work on Instagram read my top tips on how you could use Instagram to market your business so you can get snapping!
Use your business name for your handle and account name so people recognise you and you should probably use your logo as a profile picture, unless your brand is based on you as an individual, in which case, your photo might be more recognisable.
Once your branding is sorted, write a little bit about your business in the Bio section, remembering to get your important industry keywords in along with your URL so people can visit your website.
Build Your Followers
Now you need to let people know about your account. A good place to start is to invite your family and friends to visit your account. Also, advertise on your other social media profiles and link to your account in your email signature.
You should also consider following industry influencers and local businesses to start building your community. Like, repost and comment on their posts and hopefully, they will start to engage with you and follow you back.
Hashtags are a great way to be discovered as people use these to look for the things they want. Use hashtags that are relevant to your post and your brand for the most effective results.
Decide what business goals you'd like to achieve with your Instagram account. Write these goals down.
Think about how you want your brand to be perceived - how do you want your target audience to feel when they see your page? Write this down.
Take a peek at your competitors pages to see what works well for them. Decide what you do and don’t like and use this as inspiration for your own page. Write ideas down.
The above will help you formulate a strategic plan of action, along with the content ideas and posting schedule tips below.
Once you've created your plan, it's not set in stone. When you have a better idea of what works and what doesn't, adjust your strategic plan accordingly and it will serve you better and better.
There are many ways to engage followers and market your business on Instagram. You can really let your creative side run wild when posting pictures. Not sure where to start? How about:
- Sneak peaks (new products or services etc.)
- Customer Photos (user generated content - perhaps a contest for your followers to send images of them using your products)
- Behind the scenes (at your office, or out on location)
- Quotes (funny, or profound. Your own or those of others)
Best time to post?
On Instagram you can post several times a day as long as its engaging, relevant and good quality. However, you do need to think about your customers and when they’re most likely to be looking at their phone. For example, someone planning a wedding will probably be looking for suppliers in the evenings or at the weekend, so if you’re a wedding photographer you may want to post then. It’s all about trial and error and seeing what works best for your business.
Once you've found the times which get you the most engagement, add them to your strategy.
Instagram is a great tool for business marketing as it really engages people and creates a personal side to your business – plus, you’ll have fun using it!
