Using Instagram Stories for Business Marketing
Recently, Instagram surprised us all with a new feature, Instagram Stories - a new way to show the highlights of your day. For small businesses Instagram Stories is a great way to market your business as it will help you stay at the top of people’s newsfeeds, offer your audience useful, fun, or promotional information and so, give your business more exposure.
Read on for a bit more detail and to see how your small business could use Instagram Stories for marketing.
What are Instagram Stories?
Instagram’s new feature allows you to take photos and videos and put them into a story on Instagram that will disappear in twenty four hours. Stories have their own feed and don’t appear on your grid. When there is a story available to view there will be a ring around your profile picture which the viewer can click to view your story.
How to use Instagram Stories
First, make sure your Instagram app is updated to the latest version to ensure you are able to use Instagram Stories and that your privacy settings are set to public and people can see your content.
To upload a photo or video click on the plus sign in the left hand corner, which will take you to the camera. You can also use the front-facing camera for selfies. If you’d like to record a video (fifteen seconds maximum) press and hold the circle button.
You can add text or drawing to the image or video which is great for calls to action. If you want to add more to your story, you can follow the same process above and it’ll be added into your story in chronological order.
You can edit sections of your story by clicking the three dots in the bottom right hand corner where you can delete, save or share the post. The editing tool only applies to the 10 second video or photo, not the whole story.
Using Instagram Stories for Marketing
Once you’re story is uploaded you’ll see a number at the bottom of the screen – this shows you how many people have viewed each section of your story. This is a great way to see what people engage with the most.
If a post has performed particularly well you can use this to determine future content or even share it onto your profile to encourage more people to watch your story.
Instagram Stories is a fantastic way to market your business as people love seeing ‘real life’. Here are a few ideas on what you could post:
- Behind the scenes
- Sneak Peaks
- Drive sign ups or other Calls to Action
Using Instagram Stories helps you beat the latest algorithm - which no longer shows content in chronological order and is ordered in what Instagram believes you want to see most.
It’s a good way to instantly see what your audience engage with and also targets the younger demographic that predominantly use the platform.
